The extensive firefighting operation at the chemical company BYK in Kempen has concluded. After a chemical tank exploded, triggering an evacuation of 74 people from the nearby “Am Sedler” industrial area, they were able to return home later. The evacuation was a precautionary measure, and those affected found shelter with family and friends.
The fire brigade, consisting of around 350 personnel, responded to a fire at the chemical company following an automatic fire alarm. A chemical tank explosion occurred during the firefighting efforts, resulting in minor injuries to three rescue workers. The damaged company building had its roof blown off by strong winds, making entry difficult. Drones were employed to assess the situation.

Despite the presence of TDI, a potentially explosive chemical, the drones indicated stable conditions around the chemical containers. Consequently, all safety measures were lifted. The fire brigade remains on-site to provide guidance to the company, with ongoing checks on the containers. A decision regarding the transportation or pumping out of the chemicals will be made by a crisis team.
The affected company, BYK, established a hotline for concerned residents, who were offered accommodations by the city of Kempen. Various organizations, including DRK and Malteser Hilfsdienst, provided support. The head of the company’s crisis management team estimates that operations might remain suspended for several weeks due to the presence of potentially explosive chemicals in 15 tanks.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and there are concerns about potential toxic substance release. A warning was issued to residents through the Nina app to minimize exposure. The site continues to be cordoned off to secure the area.
