Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has made significant strides in reducing the carbon footprint of its coating solutions. Through the adoption of innovative mass balance approaches, the company has introduced bio-attributed products capable of cutting carbon emissions by up to 100% compared to traditional alternatives.
Driving Sustainability in Coatings
In 2024, Arkema secured multiple Mass Balance ISCC PLUS certifications across its facilities in the United States, Europe, and Asia. These certifications validate the integration of renewable and recycled feedstocks into the company’s production processes without compromising product performance.
“This milestone highlights our commitment to supporting the circular economy,” said Richard Jenkins, Senior Vice President of Coating Solutions at Arkema. “By replacing virgin fossil feedstocks with sustainable materials, we enable our partners to meet their environmental goals while maintaining the same level of quality.”
Global Impact Across Regions
The certifications cover a wide range of products and regions:
- Asia: Waterborne acrylic resins, UV/LED/EB curing resins, and acrylic monomers produced in China.
- Europe: Polyester resins in Spain, waterborne acrylic additives and monomers in France, and acrylic resins in Germany.
- United States: Acrylic monomers produced in Texas.
These sustainable products cater to diverse industries, including green energy, e-mobility, building efficiency, and advanced electronics.
A Comprehensive Approach
The mass balance chain of custody ensures that the origin of renewable feedstocks is tracked and appropriately allocated to finished products through auditable bookkeeping. ISCC+ certification guarantees compliance with sustainable feedstock standards.
Arkema’s bio-attributed solutions are compatible with high-performance coating technologies, such as waterborne, powder, and UV/LED/EB curing systems. The company plans to expand these offerings further in 2025 to meet growing market demand for sustainable materials.
Supporting a Sustainable Future
This achievement aligns with Arkema’s long-term vision to lead in specialty materials and drive sustainability across industries. With approximately €9.5 billion in sales in 2023 and operations in 55 countries, Arkema continues to address global challenges in energy, recycling, urbanization, and mobility through innovation.
By reducing the carbon footprint of its coatings, Arkema is setting a benchmark for the industry, paving the way for greener manufacturing practices and fostering a sustainable future for its customers and partners.
