In response, India is enhancing its preparedness by developing strategic oil reserves in coastal areas, including major refineries and notable locations like the Mangalore SEZ in Karnataka and salt caverns in Bikaner.
Engineers India Ltd i.e. EIL has produced feasibility studies and expects to determine technical and economic viability by the end of 2025.
India’s goal behind this strategy is to backup oil for 90 days of consumption.

As of now June 2025, Reliance industries are the largest private oil refinery, boasts extensive storage infrastructure.
Although not directly linked to the new reserve sites, Reliance may collaborate on refining, storage, and transportation in the future if the government introduces public-private partnership (PPP) models. Similarly, the Tata group is not directly involved but could potentially participate in the initiative.
These reserves are now getting developed by the government.
