Mumbai Battles Severe Flooding as Arabian Sea Unleashes 4.78m High Tide

On the 26th of June, around 1:27 PM, Mumbai witnessed one of the severe tidal surges in recent years, as a 4.78m high surge fueled by monsoon rain pressure from the Arabian Sea led to widespread 0f flooding in Bandra’s town. It disrupted the road, transport, and forced residents to deal with water entering their homes and protecting their belongings.

  • Logistics and Supply Chain: Submerged access roads slowed container movement at the Nhava Sheva Port (JNPT). Leading courier and cargo firms reported delivery delays of up to 48 hours. Cold storage and warehousing facilities in Bhiwandi and Navi Mumbai experienced a partial shutdown
  • Manufacturing and Industrial Estates: The MIDC asked factories in Andheri, Taloja, and Thane to close. Small and medium manufacturers faced delays in receiving orders and unplanned downtime. Power outages caused temporary halts in assembly lines across many areas.
  • Corporate Offices and Real Estate: Commercial complexes in Lower Parel, BKC, and Fort either closed or switched to remote operations. Waterlogging in parking and basement areas raised safety concerns.

Government And Industry Response:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deployed over 100 pumps and rescue teams. Additionally, CII and FICCI have issued advisories to their member businesses, focusing on safety, continuity, and employee welfare.

The areas which got affected more were South Mumbai: Churchgate, Fort, Marine Line, and Colaba. Suburban Mumbai: Andheri, Kurla, BKC, and Chembur. Industrial Area: Bhiwandi, Navi Mumbai, Taloja, and MIDC zone.
