Delhi is all set to witness artificial rain between 4th and 11th July 2025, spending over crores. The artificial rain will be performed through cloud seeding. If weather conditions permit, this will help in stabilizing the city’s atmosphere and temperature. The initiative will provide a bit of relief to people.

Due to deterioration in Delhi’s atmosphere and increase in heat temperature, people’s hindrance had increased. To end this ongoing environment, the Delhi government has taken a big decision. As announced by the Environment Minister, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, an investment of Rs. 3.21 crores will be taking over this project.

This will be the first time in the history of the state, under the leadership of chief Minister Rekha Gupta. Every 100 sq km will be covered in the 90-minute sorties. This step has been initiated by the Delhi Government and coordinated with IIT Kanpur and IMD Pune.

This initiative is titled as “Technology Demonstration and Evaluation of Cloud Seeding as an Alternative for Delhi NCR Pollution Mitigation”.

As artificial rain takes place in July it will help in controlling air pollution and settle dust pollutants and boost agriculture. It is beneficial for farmers to sow crops and gives soil adequate water to start sowing operations.

This initiative is not a permanent solution to the environmental problems but for sure a temporary relief to the people.
This is a short-lived process, which will help in boosting water supply, and crop rescue.

Cloud seeding is a process in which chemicals are sprayed like silver iodide or potassium iodide in rain-bearing clouds, and it only works when clouds already exist, not in clear skies.

But the question is, is rupees 3.21 crore investment worth it in cloud seeding?

The answer is yes, if performed with perfection and looking for contingent and evidence-based action. No, if you think it’s a long-term pollution drop process.
Do you think, these trials should be coupled with initiative followed by people also? Like, emission reduction plan, clean public transport, dust control and tree planting.
