On 3rd July, 2025, at 12:30 am, Diogo Jota died at the age of 28, and his younger brother, Andre Silva, at the age of 26, in a car crash on the Spain A-52 motorway near Cernadilla in Zamora province. Their Lamborghini reportedly had a tyre blowout while overtaking.
They veered off the road and burst into flames, which killed both of them instantly on the spot. Firefighters and local emergency services immediately reached the spot, but both were already declared dead.
Diogo Jota was born on 4th December, 1996 and had a successful career in football with 65 goals. His career highlights were that his team, Liverpool, won the Premier League in May 2025 FA Cup, and the League Cup twice. He had 49 caps and 14 goals for Portugal and won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He was newly married to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso on 22nd June, 2025, 0 days before his crash. The couple has three young children.
OUTPOURING OF GRIEF!
Liverpool FC described it as an “Unimaginable loss” and requested some privacy for his family. Fans laid flowers at Anfield and called for him to retire his shirt number, which is 20. Jürgen Klopp called the event “heartbreaking,” and every player from the team offered condolences to his family. Some players, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James, Prince William, Rafael Nadal, and many clubs, including ManU, Arsenal, Chelsea, Wolves, City, and Everton, mourned publicly.
Portugal’s Government PM, Luis Montenegro, and the Portuguese Football Federation expressed deep sorrow. UEFA arranged a minute of silence before the Women’s Euro football match between Portugal and Spain.
