Synopsis: Apollo Micro Systems has received two technology transfer approvals from DRDO for laser-based directed energy weapon systems and electro-optical tracking solutions, strengthening its position in India’s defence indigenisation push and expanding its capabilities in next-generation anti-drone and energy weapon platforms.

Hyderabad: Apollo Micro Systems Ltd on Monday said it has received approvals from the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) for two transfers of technology in the domain of Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) systems, marking a significant step in its defence electronics and advanced weapons portfolio.

In a regulatory filing, the company said the approvals relate to the transfer of technology for a multi-channel 10 kW laser-based directed energy weapon system from DRDO’s Centre for High Energy Systems & Sciences (CHESS), Hyderabad, and an electro-optical (EO) tracking system with EO sensors for DEW from DRDO’s Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun.

The technologies will enable Apollo Micro Systems to design, manufacture and support critical subsystems for laser-based weapons, which are increasingly being explored by armed forces worldwide for precision engagement of aerial threats such as drones, missiles and small vehicles. Directed energy weapons offer advantages such as rapid response, high accuracy and applicability across varied combat environments.

The company said the transfers align with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and defence indigenisation objectives, and would complement its ongoing development of anti-drone systems under the ‘Make’ category for the Indian Armed Forces. These programmes include both soft-kill and hard-kill solutions to counter emerging swarm drone threats.

Commenting on the development, managing director Karunakar Reddy said the approvals strengthen Apollo Micro Systems’ ability to deliver indigenous, high-technology defence solutions, while expanding its role in next-generation directed energy and counter-UAV platforms.
