The 935-km cross-country pipeline, which supplies 7.8 million metric tonnes per annum of crude oil to BPCL’s Bina refinery, was upgraded without any operational shutdowns, allowing uninterrupted crude flow during the execution of the project. The initiative comes at a time when India’s energy demand is rising steadily, putting greater emphasis on the reliability of pipeline infrastructure.

As part of the project, ABB deployed its ABB Ability SCADAvantage system across the pipeline, replaced 35 remote terminal units at critical pumping, pigging and valve stations, and installed new SCADA servers at Vadinar and Bina.

The scope also included strengthening cyber security through network protection, system hardening and centralised monitoring, alongside failover and disaster recovery capabilities at both ends of the pipeline.

BPCL said the modernisation has significantly enhanced system resilience and operational reliability, enabling the pipeline to withstand cyber threats and technical disruptions while maintaining continuous operations.

ABB executives said the project underscores the company’s focus on delivering future-ready solutions for India’s critical energy assets.

The company noted that it has partnered with BPCL on multiple projects and currently provides automation solutions across nearly two-thirds of BPCL’s pipeline network.

Industry experts said investments in automation and cyber security are becoming increasingly critical for oil and gas pipelines, given their strategic importance and growing digitalisation.

For ABB India, the project reinforces its positioning in large-scale energy infrastructure modernisation, aligned with the country’s broader energy security priorities.
