New Delhi: India has stepped up its engagement in global workforce development with the launch of a national Skills Accelerator that will focus on removing barriers to equitable skilling and strengthen industry-aligned training programmes for workers, the World Economic Forum (WEF) said on Saturday at its 56th Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland.

The India Accelerator joins a global network of 45 national accelerators established under the WEF’s Reskilling Revolution initiative, which collectively have supported around 15 million people and are now on track to reach more than 850 million individuals worldwide as part of a broader push to equip the labour force with future-ready skills.

Designed as a multi-stakeholder platform bringing together government, industry and civil society, the India Accelerator will work to translate global insights into locally tailored actions on employment, skills development and inclusive economic growth — especially in areas reshaped by rapid technological change such as artificial intelligence, digital technologies and sustainability.

The initiative complements the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship’s (MSDE) recent memorandum of understanding with the WEF to strengthen India’s technical and vocational education and training (TVET) ecosystem by promoting lifelong learning, upskilling and closer alignment between skilling initiatives and industry demand.

WEF’s Reskilling Revolution has mobilised commitments from more than 25 technology companies to support 120 million workers with access to AI tools, training and job pathways. The global effort aims to provide improved access to skills, education and economic opportunities as labour markets evolve with the energy transition, technological adoption and changing economic paradigms.

With its inclusion in this international framework, India aims to boost employability at scale, particularly for those in underserved and vulnerable segments of the workforce, while reinforcing the country’s broader vision for inclusive growth and future of work preparedness
