Ahmedabad: Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has formalized a major escalation of its environmental strategy by mainstreaming the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework into its core business strategy. This move reinforces the company’s shift from traditional Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) compliance toward a more integrated, “nature-positive” model of clean energy development.

The adoption of the TNFD, a structured, science-based approach to identify and disclose nature-related dependencies, risks, and opportunities, is aimed at strengthening the long-term resilience of the company’s massive renewable energy expansion. AGEL had initiated company-wide assessments to map these nature-related factors across all its operational sites even before formally joining the TNFD Adopters group.

Central to the announcement is AGEL’s formal commitment to achieving No Net Loss of Biodiversity by 2030. This ecological stewardship agenda will be supported by a significant plan to plant 27.86 million trees across its project locations.

AGEL is currently developing the world’s largest renewable energy plant—a 30 GW capacity project on 538 square kilometers of barren land at Khavda, Gujarat. The company, which already operates an industry-leading renewable portfolio of over 16.5 GW spread across 12 states, has a stated goal of reaching 50 GW by 2030.

Commenting on the strategic shift, Ashish Khanna, CEO, AGEL, emphasized the criticality of this approach for sustained growth. “Nature is central to our growth story… Our approach is to ensure that renewable expansion actively contributes to protecting and restoring natural capital. Addressing nature-related risks in a positive manner is critical for long-term business resilience and sustainable value creation for communities, investors and the planet,” he said.

AGEL’s current operations are already certified as ‘water positive’, ‘single-use plastic free’, and ‘zero waste-to-landfill’. By aligning with the TNFD, the company strengthens its position among global renewable giants integrating comprehensive biodiversity considerations into its strategic planning.
