Recent surveys show that Gen Z is pulling away from social platforms. The reason behind it has been found that they want to get real-life experience and get to spend more time with themselves. There was a time when Instagram used to rule among youngsters. They are still present on social media.

It has been seen that  Gen Z users are slowly stepping away from Instagram, not deleting their accounts, but quietly reducing their activity. They are switching platforms and detoxing their social life.

As per multiple surveys, Gen Z’s usage of Instagram has declined slightly. Especially if we compare it to other social media platforms like Snapchat, Twitter, and Telegram. Instagram stories and posts are seeing to reduction from the younger audience, showing their lack of interest and willingness to shift to private or niche online spaces.

Youngsters are more likely to lean towards a platform that provides them with their personal space and privacy. They should feel secure about their content and messages. Smaller and controlled circles are being preferred over public image curation.

REASON WHY GEN Z IS LOGGING OFF!

  • Authenticity Fatigue: Nowadays days Instagram is promoting a highly curated and polished image culture. Youngsters prefer more real, messy, and unfiltered content over highlight reels. It makes them feel personal and connected.
  • Mental Health Awareness: It has been linked to anxiety, low self-esteem, and body image issues, especially among young women. Sometimes there is so much negativity on how people are living, eating, and about looks, which triggers them mentally. Many times, they feel pressured to fit into a fake society and act or react to things as others want, and they can’t be themselves, which makes them lose their identity somewhere.
  • Algorithm Fatigue: Users are frustrated with the platform pushing influencer content, ads, and irrelevant reels rather than posts from friends. When we are upset or frustrated, we open the platform, but the algorithm plays its role and suggests the reel and content that we wanna trying to avoid sometimes.
  • Commercialization: Instagram is no longer a place to chill or about friends, but more about a marketplace. Each and every reel or content is interrupted by sponsored content, shopping features, and creator ads. They see this as disingenuous.

NOT GONE JUST DIFFERENTE!

The trend is increasing in digital detoxes, app usage tracking, and screen time reduction. Main motive is to increase the quality of their life. They are leading the digital decluttering movement. Many of them are switching to journaling, reading, or spending most of the time to learn new things or on hobbies.

Unlike Millennials, who may announce a break from the platform but still use it on Chrome, Gen Z simply stops showing up. Accounts are going dormant rather than being deleted. Instagram is not dead for Gen Z’s but the way they are using it has changed. They have stopped posting regularly, started using DM’s instead of posts, and started posting more on “close friends” for a private and safer place.

Gen Z hasn’t disappeared from the internet; they are just reclaiming it on their own terms. They are growing with the awareness of how Meta collects their data. Many have been tired of following the trends and aesthetics. “Being like someone else and blending in their shadow never works for too long.” Understanding of being their own and how peaceful life could be after being private, making them do it. It takes lots of courage to restart things and face where were you getting wrong. Bravo!
