New Delhi: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Friday constituted a high-level expert committee to draw up a roadmap for reducing air pollution caused by vehicular emissions in Delhi-NCR, amid persistent concerns over worsening air quality and public health risks.

The panel, chaired by Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras, with former AIIMS director Dr Randeep Guleria as co-chairperson, brings together academicians, health experts, automotive researchers and policy specialists. The committee has been tasked with recommending a multi-pronged strategy to curb emissions such as PM2.5, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds from the transport sector.
According to CAQM, the committee will review existing policies and regulatory frameworks, including Bharat Stage emission norms, electric mobility programmes and fuel-efficiency standards across the region. It will also assess segment-wise contributions of vehicular emissions, examine technological readiness and infrastructure needs, and evaluate cost and incentive structures for accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles across categories.
The panel is expected to submit its recommendations within two months and may provide interim suggestions after consultations with key stakeholders. The first meeting of the committee is scheduled for December 15, 2025.
CAQM said the initiative is aimed at strengthening evidence-based policymaking to improve air quality and mitigate health impacts in the Delhi-NCR region, where vehicular emissions remain a major contributor to pollution levels.
