On 30th June, approximately around 9 am IST, there was a wild explosion at Sigachi Industries in the Pashamylaram industrial area of Sangaredyy district, 50km from Hyderabad. The building collapsed and caught fire. According to the initial report, the cause of the explosion is due to the spray dryer/reactor. Around 108-143 workers were present at that time.

Reports initially indicated 12-14 fatalities, but the toll steadily climbed. Later reports confirmed over 40 deaths, with 35 injured and 12 in critical condition. Authorities were still searching for 10-17 people, with fears that some might be trapped under debris even days later.

A pressure buildup in the spray dryer, possibly exacerbated by fine chemical dust, likely triggered the explosion. Authorities have appointed a high-level forensic panel, including a five-member committee and an IICT scientist, to investigate the incident. The facility will remain closed for a minimum of 90 days. The Telangana government has mandated bi-monthly safety inspections at high-risk industries and is strengthening oversight

State authorities and Sigachi have announced compensation packages, offering ₹1 crore to each deceased family, ₹50 lakhs to those severely injured, and ₹10 lakhs to those with minor injuries. Prime Minister Modi will provide an additional ₹2 lakh to each family of the deceased. The incident caused Sigachi’s shares to plummet by nearly 18-24%

The authorities couldn’t trace the CEO and MD. Families and political leaders praised the absence of company officials. The police filed FIRs against Sigachi management under sections 105, 110, and 117 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita. The state and the National Human Rights Commission issued notices. Investigators highlighted that casual labourers had inconsistent attendance records, raising concerns about oversight and working conditions.

VOICES FROM THE GROUND :

“Even after 24 hours, they did not care to speak to us. The management has no respect for the lives of the workers”.

The tragic loss of innocent lives in the factory fire raises a haunting question: Who bears the responsibility? Is it the workers who toiled tirelessly to provide for their families, or the unaccountable management? Monetary compensation can never revive the departed souls. The callous disregard for human life is appalling. I hope the culprits are brought to justice, and the innocent victims and their families receive the justice they deserve.
