LRQA, a leading global assurance partner, has officially verified Bridgestone’s tire manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, India, as the company’s first-ever carbon-neutral site. Bridgestone, a renowned global tire and sustainable mobility solutions leader, underwent a rigorous audit of its scope 1 and 2 emissions to achieve validation in accordance with the international PAS 2060 standard.

Eco- Friendly Tyres: LRQA verifies Bridgestone's plant in India

This certification marks a significant achievement in Bridgestone’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint within its manufacturing operations. It aligns with Bridgestone’s global goal of achieving carbon neutrality for scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 2050 and an impressive 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from operational activities by 2030 compared to the 2011 benchmark.

The Pune manufacturing facility, known for producing over 4 million tires annually, has successfully reduced its carbon footprint by a remarkable 94% over the years. This reduction was accomplished through a range of strategic initiatives, including the installation of solar panels and the adoption of a carbon-neutral biomass-based boiler plant using biomass briquettes derived from agricultural waste.

To offset the facility’s emissions of 2,974 tons of CO2, Bridgestone India took an innovative approach by acquiring Verified Carbon Standard credits from Acme in India. This initiative revolves around a bundled solar photovoltaic project designed to harness solar energy, contributing to regional power grids across various Indian states.

As part of the PAS 2060 verification process, the Pune facility has committed to an ambitious three-year plan aimed at further reducing CO2 emissions. Bridgestone remains steadfast in its commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, setting a commendable standard for the industry.

Olga Rivas, ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) Product Cluster Manager at LRQA, expressed their support for Bridgestone’s decarbonization efforts, emphasizing the importance of trustworthy sustainability strategies and climate change claims in their verification process.

Stefano Sanchini, the Managing Director of Bridgestone India, emphasized the company’s global commitment to achieving a carbon-neutral mobility society. In India, Bridgestone is dedicated to this goal and has implemented various initiatives, including the installation of a solar power plant and a carbon-neutral boiler. Additionally, they are progressively replacing diesel-based forklifts with electric ones and shifting from LPG to electric power. Bridgestone’s plans involve further increasing the use of green energy, reducing carbon emissions across their operations, and closely monitoring scope emissions at the shop-floor level.

Koji Takagi, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Bridgestone Europe, Middle East, India, and Africa (EMIA), highlighted the company’s overarching mission of “Serving Society with Superior Quality” and its commitment to providing social and customer value as a sustainable solutions provider. He celebrated the historic milestone of carbon neutral certification for one of Bridgestone’s two tire plants in India, emphasizing that this achievement aligns with Bridgestone’s global goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, in accordance with the Paris climate agreement.LRQA verifies Bridgestone’s plant in India as carbon neutral against international standard PAS 2060
