Japan and India are eager to shake hands and have a great time! The world’s first introduction of the next-generation E10 Shinkansen Bullet Train. India will introduce high-speed rail powered by Japanese technology with the Rs. 1.08 lakh crore Bulletin Train project, Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.
India is all set to debut Japan’s E10 Bullet Train in Rs. 1.08 lakh crore high-speed Rail project by 2030. Both nations have agreed that Japan’s next-generation bullet train, the E10 series, will be installed in both countries around 2030.
The project team is building a 508 km corridor featuring 12 stations. From Mumbai and Ahemdabad-352 km in Gujrat, 156 km in Maharashtra. This project covers 456 km of viaducts, 21 km of tunnels, ensuring a 7 km undersea section Thane Creek- and 15 river bridges.
As of July 2025, construction teams have advanced the tunnel between BKC and Shilphata by 2.7 kilometers. Overall, five river crossings and 310 km of viaducts have been completed, and seven additional bridges and several stations are almost finished. Although, Tunnel-boring challenges occurs. German-made TBM’s remain stuck at a Chinese port since June- vital for tunneling, it potentially delays the underground sections. The External Affairs Ministry has stepped in to diplomatically address the situation.
The commercial operations are aimed by 2030. Aligning with the launch of E10 trains in Japan, the trials are expected in 2026-27. September 2017 saw the laying of the foundation, and the entire budget is ₹1.08 lakh crore.
The Local production & partnerships-
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF)- Chennai has commissioned BEML to build 2 domestic high-speed trainsets reaching 289/km test speeds. Additionally, ICF and European companies are working together on telecom and signaling systems.
Moreover, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Japan in late August 2025 to finalize the agreement on the E10 Shinkansen trains and strengthen India-Japan strategic ties.
