According to data shared by Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Shri Jitin Prasada, in the Rajya Sabha, India is now the second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones globally.

The most dramatic shift has occurred in the mobile phone segment. In 2014-15, India’s mobile production stood at a modest Rs 0.18 lakh crore; by FY 2024-25, this figure has leaped 28 times to reach Rs 5.5 lakh crore.

The export story is even more compelling:

Export Growth: Mobile phone exports grew from a mere Rs 0.01 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2 lakh crore in 2024-25—a staggering 127-fold increase.

Net Exporter Status: India has successfully transitioned from being an importer of mobile phones in 2014 to a net exporter today.

PLI Impact: The PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing, launched in 2020, has alone attracted investments worth Rs 15,172 crore and generated over 1.71 lakh jobs as of December 2025.

The broader electronics ecosystem has benefited from a suite of policy interventions, including the Semicon India Programme and various tax reforms.

Building on the mobile success, the government launched PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware in 2023 to localize the manufacturing of laptops, tablets, and servers. As of December 2025, these schemes have contributed a cumulative production of Rs 16,531 crore and created nearly 5,000 direct jobs.

To further reduce import dependency, the government continues to promote 100% FDI in the sector and is investing in Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) to provide a world-class infrastructure for component manufacturing.
