India Sets Sights on Global MedTech Leadership: Secretary Amit Agrawal

Shri Amit Agrawal, Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, highlighted India’s strategic vision for the medical technology (MedTech) sector during his keynote address at the APACMed Medical Technology Forum (MTF) 2025 Leadership Dialogue, themed “Unlocking India for Global Leadership in MedTech.”

Shri Agrawal emphasized that India’s demographic dividend, rising disposable incomes, and sustained economic growth, combined with a conducive policy environment, position the country to substantially increase its share in the global MedTech market by 2047. He noted that the scaling up of public healthcare programs and broader access to medical services will further solidify India as a promising MedTech hub.

To foster domestic innovation and reduce import dependence, three modern medical device parks are under construction and expected to be operational by early 2027. These parks will provide shared infrastructure and specialized facilities for manufacturing medical-grade alloys, ceramics, polymers, glass, and packaging materials, enhancing ease of doing business for MedTech manufacturers.

Shri Agrawal also highlighted strengthened academia–industry collaboration, including:

  • Formation of a NIPER Academia–Industry Coordination Committee
  • Industry representation on Boards of Studies
  • Professors of practice and chair professorships
  • Local Industry–Institute Partnership Forums

These initiatives aim to co-develop curricula, promote industrial training, foster faculty and student engagement at industry sites, and encourage sponsored and joint research, with a focus on industry-oriented projects.

The Secretary reaffirmed the success of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for medical devices, which has accelerated domestic manufacturing and attracted global investments, positioning India as a key player across the entire global value chain—from innovation and design to manufacturing and exports.

Emphasizing India’s commitment to global healthcare cooperation, Shri Agrawal invoked the Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”the world is one family — aligning with India’s G20 theme, “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. He underlined India’s goal to advance healthcare through collaborative international partnerships.

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers continues to drive India’s emergence as a premier MedTech innovation and manufacturing hub, supporting the nation’s vision of self-reliance and active global engagement in health technology.
