India has taken a significant step toward expanding its global textile diplomacy as a high-level delegation from the Ministry of Textiles, led by Shri P. Sivakumar, Member Secretary of the Central Silk Board (CSB) and Secretary General of the International Sericultural Commission (ISC), concluded a multi-sectoral engagement in Georgia from 17–21 November 2025.

The visit aimed at deepening cooperation across sericulture, textiles, apparel manufacturing, and carpet trade, while opening new channels for research and commercial collaboration between the two nations.

During the visit, the delegation actively participated in the 11th BACSA International Conference – CULTUSERI 2025. Shri Sivakumar delivered the Opening Address on behalf of the ISC, emphasizing India’s global leadership in traditional silk knowledge and its emerging relevance to creative and cultural industries. He also presented a technical paper titled “The Chronicles of Wild Silk.”

CSB Director (Tech) Dr. S. Manthira Moorthy showcased India’s scientific achievements with a presentation on Indo-Bulgarian collaboration that resulted in the development of a productive bivoltine silkworm hybrid suited for Indian conditions.

A key highlight of India’s participation was the presentation of the “5-in-1 Silk Stole”—a premium product combining Mulberry, Oak Tasar, Tropical Tasar, Muga and Eri silks. Conceived under the leadership of the Member Secretary, the product received strong interest for its cultural value, craftsmanship and high export potential.

The delegation also held extensive interactions with Georgian universities, sericulture labs, research centres, textile mills, apparel manufacturers, carpet traders and the Georgian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI). These engagements highlighted the scope for expanding bilateral trade, enabling joint R&D projects, and promoting industry-level partnerships.

Meetings with senior officials of the Government of Georgia focused on market access, diversification of trade, and cooperation in value-added silk products, carpets and high-quality textiles.

Key Outcomes of the Visit

  • Strengthened India–Georgia ties in sericulture research and textile & apparel trade
  • Showcasing of India’s innovative 5-in-1 Silk Stole, positioned as a flagship export product
  • Identification of fresh opportunities for trade diversification in carpets and high-value textiles
  • Enhanced pathways for institutional partnerships and technical collaboration
  • Reinforced India’s leadership through active participation on the BACSA international platform

The visit marks an important milestone in advancing India’s textile diplomacy, promoting cross-border partnerships and supporting the global growth of India’s silk and textile sectors.
