New Delhi: Signalling a major strategic push into next-generation technologies, NITI Aayog’s Frontier Tech Hub on Thursday released a comprehensive roadmap aimed at transforming India into a “leading quantum-powered economy” over the next decade. The roadmap, unveiled in Telangana in the presence of senior state leaders and top NITI Aayog officials, lays out a detailed plan to accelerate India’s capabilities in quantum computing, secure communication, precision sensing, and advanced materials.

Framing quantum technologies as one of the most disruptive forces of the 21st century, the document argues that early movers will shape global standards, secure strategic advantages and lead the next wave of innovation across healthcare, finance, logistics, materials science, and national security.

“For India, the promise of quantum goes far beyond technology… it represents the opportunity to redefine our place in the world,” the roadmap notes, adding that the sector forms the backbone of future AI, biotechnology and secure digital systems.

Unveiling the roadmap, Telangana IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu said quantum computing marks a “turning point” where technology begins to solve problems once thought impossible. Telangana, he said, is investing in deep research infrastructure and talent pipelines to position itself at the forefront of this shift.

Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member of NITI Aayog, underlined that quantum technologies will be critical to India’s 2047 developed-economy goals. “We must integrate quantum applications into key national missions and industrial sectors,” he said, emphasising the need to scale talent and research infrastructure.

NITI Aayog CEO B.V.R. Subrahmanyam warned that the next five years will determine whether India becomes a global supplier or remains a dependent consumer of quantum technologies. “We must combine our unmatched talent base and digital public infrastructure to build a quantum-powered India,” he said.

The roadmap was developed with IBM and an expert council comprising leaders from industry and academia, reflecting a coordinated effort to strengthen India’s quantum ecosystem. Key interventions proposed include expanding R&D capacity, accelerating innovation-to-market pathways, building secure and trusted supply chains, and cultivating quantum-skilled talent at scale.
