New Delhi, November 26, 2025:

In a landmark step toward sustainable innovation, the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM), under the Ministry of Textiles, has unveiled India’s first scientifically designed model for the dignified recycling of the National Flag. Supported through a major R&D initiative, the project has also successfully developed advanced technologies for recycling aramid fibres used in defence, aerospace and protective textile applications.
The initiative is executed through the newly established Atal Centre of Textile Recycling and Sustainability at IIT Delhi’s Panipat facility. It integrates national pride, sustainability, and cutting-edge research—ushering in a new era for India’s technical textiles ecosystem.
To showcase these breakthroughs, the Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) will conduct a dedicated demonstration event in Panipat on November 28, 2025. The event will bring together stakeholders from industry, academia, and government to witness the real-world applicability of these technologies.
First-of-its-kind recycling model for the Tricolour
For the first time in India, a structured, respectful, and scientifically sound process has been established for recycling retired national flags.
The model ensures that:
- the sanctity and dignity of the Tricolour are preserved,
- the fabric’s integrity is maintained or repurposed responsibly,
- no part of the flag is misused or disposed of carelessly.
This initiative also supports the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga movement by enabling a dignified lifecycle for the flag after its ceremonial use.
Breakthrough in Aramid Fibre Recycling
The project’s second major achievement is the development of an innovative recycling process for aramid fibres—high-strength materials widely used in:
- defence gear,
- aerospace components,
- fire-resistant and protective textiles.
Aramid waste traditionally poses a severe environmental challenge due to its durability and complex structure. The new recycling technology offers:
- lower waste generation,
- cost efficiencies for defence and industrial manufacturers,
- sustainable raw material alternatives.
Several technical textile manufacturers have already adopted these solutions, reflecting strong industry confidence and early commercial readiness.
A step forward for India’s technical textiles mission
The initiatives mark a significant milestone for NTTM’s efforts to integrate sustainability with national objectives and accelerate India’s leadership in advanced textiles.
