Paetongtarn Shinawatra was born in San Kamphaeng, Chiang Mai, Thailand. Being born into the family of a businessman and politician, she had a comfortable life in her childhood. Her father, Thaksin Shinawatra was a part of Thai Police earlier. After leaving his position in the police, he entered politics and became the Prime Minister of Thailand in 2001. Paetongtarn Shinawatra completed her schooling at Saint Joseph Convent School and Mater Dei School. For graduation, she chose a BA in Political Science with Sociology and anthropology from the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn. Shinawatra is a postgraduate in the field of Hotel Management from the University of Surrey.

Shinawatra holds her position as Prime Minister of Thailand on 16 August 2024. She became prime minister after Pheu Thai nominated her for the succession of the previous prime minister. No other party than Pheu Thai named any other candidate. Thus, Shinawatra took the position after the House of Representatives approved it. King Vajiralongkorn also gave her the endorsement on 18 August 2024. She replaced Srettha Thavisin after he was charged and found guilty of an ethical breach by the court.
