As part of the initiative, Urban Company will integrate e-Shram registration into its onboarding and training ecosystem, enabling assisted enrolment through its partner app, training centres and UC Mitra kiosks. The company said the move is aimed at ensuring formal recognition and improved access to social security systems for workers in the platform economy.

Targeting full coverage of active professionals

Currently, about 20% of Urban Company’s over 59,000 service professionals are registered on the e-Shram portal. Through the structured enrolment drive, the company aims to cover all active service professionals associated with it.

The initiative places special emphasis on women service professionals, including those under its InstaHelp vertical, and aligns with broader national priorities around worker formalisation and social security expansion.

Abhiraj Singh Bhal, CEO of Urban Company, said technology platforms have a critical role in enabling access to formal welfare mechanisms. “By integrating e-Shram enrolment into our onboarding and training processes, we are taking a meaningful step toward strengthening social security coverage for our service professionals,” he said.

Ravindra Peiris, Senior Specialist for Employers’ Activities at ILO DWT, New Delhi, said formal recognition of workers through initiatives such as e-Shram is essential to advancing decent work and inclusive social protection, particularly within the fast-growing platform economy.

Embedding enrolment into platform infrastructure

The programme will embed registration at structured touchpoints such as onboarding, upskilling and refresher training sessions to ensure sustained adoption rather than one-time enrolment drives.

Urban Company, listed on the NSE under the symbol URBANCO, connects customers with professionals across home services and beauty segments. According to its 9M FY26 Earnings Index, average monthly in-hand earnings for active service professionals (excluding InstaHelp) stood at ₹28,322, with the top 5% earning ₹51,673.

All active service professionals are covered under group life and accidental insurance, including life cover of up to ₹10 lakh and disability cover of up to ₹6 lakh.

Policy significance

The collaboration comes amid increasing policy focus on extending social security to gig and platform workers under the Code on Social Security framework. By integrating e-Shram enrolment into its digital and physical infrastructure, Urban Company and ILO aim to create a scalable model for worker formalisation in India’s expanding gig economy.

Shares of Urban Company will be in focus as investors track developments related to regulatory compliance, workforce formalisation and long-term sustainability of platform-based business models.
