The United States expressed support for a thorough investigation into the killing of a Khalistani separatist in Canada in June. This statement comes two days after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised concerns about the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the case which is causing a diplomatic dispute between New Delhi and Ottawa.

US In Support to the Investigation Into the Khalistani Separatist Hardeep Nijjar Murder

The US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti described Trudeau’s allegations as “troubling” and emphasized the importance of adhering to principles of international law, sovereignty, and non-interference. Trudeau had stated in the House of Commons that any foreign government involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil was an unacceptable violation of sovereignty. India strongly rejected these allegations as “absurd” and “motivated” and reciprocated by expelling a senior Canadian diplomat.

The victim Hardeep Singh Nijjar was a Canadian Khalistani separatist leader who was shot dead in Surrey on June 18. Garcetti emphasized the need to allow the active criminal investigation to proceed and not jump to conclusions.

The US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby supported Ottawa’s efforts to investigate the matter and encouraged cooperation from New Delhi. He called for a transparent and comprehensive investigation to uncover the facts.

Garcetti refrained from telling other countries what to do but stressed the importance of upholding international law, sovereignty and non-interference, noting that these principles should be respected in both directions. He underlined the need to allow the investigation to run its course.

Garcetti highlighted the close relationship between the US and Canada, emphasizing their partnership, friendship and regular communication. He also expressed concern about Khalistani protests in the US and called for accountability for those responsible and is hoping for cooperation between traditional friends and partners.

In summary, the United States supported a thorough investigation into the Khalistani separatist’s killing in Canada and emphasized the importance of respecting international principles of law and sovereignty while expressing its close ties with Canada and concern over related incidents in the US.
