Sanjiv Khanna becomes the 51st Chief Justice of India on Monday after succeeding DY Chandrachud. He has been appointed today for the next six months until May 2025. The new chief justice of India took the oath that the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu also attended. Who Is Sanjiv Khanna? 51st CJI

Sanjiv Khanna was born on 14 May 1960 in New Delhi, India. He started as an advocate in the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. He completed his education at the University of Delhi. Sanjiv joined as Delhi High Court Judge from 2005 to 2019. Later, he qualified as Supreme Court’s judge where he worked from 2019 to 2024. Sanjiv served the post till 10 November 2024. Afterward, President Droupadi Murmu appoints him as the new chief justice. Apart from his achievements, Sanjiv lives a happily married life with his partner. The couple gave birth to two children.

Justice Sanjiv is currently 64 years old. He will be serving as the chief justice of India up to 13 May 2025 taking retirement afterwards. In his legal journey of several years, he has been active in several cases over the years. He was present as the Supreme Court’s judge in the rulings including the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), electoral bonds scene, and abrogation of Article 370 for Jammu and Kashmir’s special status.

President of India, Droupadi Murmu also posted on X regarding the ceremony of Chief Justice of India. Sanjiv belongs to a family background of law. His father was also a Delhi High Court Judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna. He is also the nephew of Supreme Court Judge HR Khanna. He has gained a lot of experience and has been involved in several big decisions. These decisions play a lot of role in shaping the country’s future and providing growth.

The former chief Justice DY Chandrachud has completed his tenure on 10 November 2024. He has also been a Bombay High Court Judge, Chief Justice of Allahabad, and Supreme Court judge over the past few years. DY Chandrachud was the 50th Chief Justice of India from 9 November 2022 to 10 November 2024. He has become the longest-serving chief justice of India for almost 2 years. Thus, he was selected as the chief justice of India four times continuously.
