India is all set to get its first underwater metro service. On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s first underwater metro service in Bengal. This metro service was built at the cost ₹4,965 crore. This is the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro’s East-West corridor. This project has been executed by Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL). This Underwater metro service in Kolkata has made history and successfully running under the tunnel in Hoogly River. This going to bring an amazing experience for passengers. This metro corridor has been started in the year 2009. As per the details, this is a 4.8 km stretch between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade. The route also includes key places such as the IT hub Salt Lake Sector V.
The total length of this East-West metro is 10.8 km which is underground and made with all the safety measures, advanced features, and anti-collision & automatic train control mechanisms. These things are the prime reason behind the successful run of this metro corridor.
The work on this corridor began in 2009 but faced several delays in the past few years. Tunnel work under the Hooghly River was started in 2017. The first successful trial has been executed in April 2023. The tunnel is below 32 meters of river level.
